Join us and VOLUNTEER!

SPAWNERS is a community organization– nothing happens without volunteers! We always welcome more participants, and there are many ways to get involved.

Want to help? See Events
for details on upcoming events.

Creek Clean-ups – Trash has a serious impact on wildlife and water quality, and it can be immensely satisfying to work with others to remove litter and debris from our creeks. Our next clean up is coming soon, check the events listing.

Creek Surveys and Mapping – SPAWNERS volunteers use Global Positioning System units to gather data for Contra Costa County’s Watershed Atlas. We also have fun scrambling along the creek getting wet and dirty!

Water Quality Monitoring – Our water quality team meets monthly at the El Sobrante Library. We also participate in a project with Save the Bay to monitor native oyster populations.

Native Plant Gardening
– We hold regular workdays in our native plant demonstration garden. Tasks include planting, mulching, trimming, watering, and plant propagation.

Restoration
– Improve habitat for wildlife by removing invasive non-native vegetation and replant with local native plants that provide food and shelter.

Newt Rescue –January through April, help migrating newts across the street. To volunteer for the Castro Ranch Creek newt rescue in El Sobrante or for more information, contact Annabelle Travis at annabelle11_3@yahoo.com or Elizabeth O'Shea at (510)
665-3538.

Meetings – Community meetings are held the first Wednesday of every other month, at the El Sobrante Library, 7 – 9 p.m. Assistance with set up, refreshments, and clean up are always welcome. Check events for the next date.

Care and feeding of volunteers
– Sign up to bring homemade goodies to share with other volunteers at meetings or work days.

Education and Outreach – Visit a school, youth, or community group and demonstrate our three-dimensional watershed model. It’s lots of fun for both the students and the presenter! Training will be provided.

Virtual Volunteers
Data Entry – Record results for our water quality monitoring program in Excel.
Publicity – Help distribute or post our event notices to newspapers and web sites.
